All about Gas Permeable Lenses

The other name for GP lenses is Rigid Gas Permeable Lenses or RGP.

GP contacts are made of a firm, sturdy plastic that allows the passage of oxygen to the cornea of the eye. They are considered to be healthier for the eyes because they don't contain water, they resist deposits and are less likely to harbor bacteria as compared to soft contact lenses. Moreover, GP contact lenses clean and disinfect easily, do not dehydrate, and have a longer life than soft contact lenses making them a more cost-effective option as well.

The hardness of the contact lenses allows them to retain their shape and thus provide a better and crisper vision. Further by virtue of the material they are made up of and their rigidity, they are easier to handle than soft contact lenses.

GP contacts are different from hard contact lenses. GP lenses may be firm, but they are not the uncomfortable hard lenses of the past, which didn't allow much oxygen to reach the eye. Hard lenses are now rendered obsolete.

GP contact lenses are tailored to suit each individual according to the exact shape of the cornea. The eyecare practitioner will measure the shape of your cornea and prescribe lenses with the curvature, size, and corrective power that suit your particular eyes.
